Help for Refugees

Monheim am Rhein identifies as a "City for Everyone", in which inclusion is comprehensively put into practice.

Every person should belong, irrespective of cultural background, religion, sex, age, health or residence status. It is important for everyone to be given equal opportunities for personal development and education. Two welfare associations, the Advisory Center (Beratungscentrum) and SKFM (Catholic social services organization) have been commissioned to provide these services in Monheim am Rhein, together with the city authorities.


Advisory Center

The Advisory Center (Beratungscentrum) is an independent public welfare association. It has been offering free psycho-social advice and support services in Monheim am Rhein for around 40 years.

The section for refugee welfare comprises:

  • Integration into the employment market (job coaching, support for language courses and occupational qualification, help with finding jobs or internship positions, occupational and study advice, advice for recognition of foreign qualifications, advisory service to employers, mediation between Job Centre, Federal Agency for Employment and clients and/or employers, on-going follow-up after starting work).
  • Psycho-social counselling (post-traumatic therapeutic and systemic counselling, referral advice in hospitals, psycho-social centers and at psychiatrists' offices)
  • Legal advice and support (support during asylum proceedings and being joined by family, family reunion and with regard to prospects for obtaining right of abode, free legal surgery with a specialized asylum and residence lawyer).

Projects

  • Project for communicating values to juvenile refugees – "Same same but different"
  • Educational art project for traumatized refugees in co-operation with the municipal art college.
  • Co-operation with the Peter-Ustinov Comprehensive School as part of a project course on the theme of refugees.

SKFM Monheim am Rhein

The Catholic social services organization SKFM is committed, together with its 75 employees and many unpaid volunteers, to a fair and socially aware city of Monheim am Rhein.

Its refugee services include:

  • General social counselling for families and individual refugees
  • Intensive socio-educational support if needed
  • Individual counselling and information focused on "Supporting the education and development of children and adolescents"
  • Domestic and social peace, e.g. social co-existence in apartments and communal accommodation.
  • Promoting and supporting mentorships for refugees or other voluntary integration services a
