Wiener Neustadt in Austria

Wiener Neustadt was the first city with which Monheim am Rhein entered into a partnership in 1971.

With a population of around 44,000, Wiener Neustadt is the second-largest city in Lower Austria and located some 50 kilometers south of the capital Vienna. The city is of great regional importance as the administrative center of the Wiener Neustadt-Land district and as a school, shopping and garrison town. Our partnership is characterized by old friendships, such as those between the political parties SPD and SPÖ and the fire brigades. In recent years, new friendships have developed through regular student exchanges at the Peter Ustinov Comprehensive School and the Otto Hahn Gymnasium.

In 2021, the two cities celebrate the 50th anniversary of their vibrant partnership. The multifarious and long-standing relations will be celebrated in Monheim am Rhein troughout the entire year, including events of various actors and at the city's cultural institutions. A big anniversary party is scheduled for August 2021.

Opening of the Lower Austria State Exhibition

In March 2019, Mayor Daniel Zimmermann traveled with a delegation to Wiener Neustadt for the opening of the Lower Austria State Exhibition. The motto of the exhibition was “World in Motion!”. It gave the city an opportunity to restore historic sites and use them as cultural venues. Among other things, the delegation visited the casemates – an archaeological gem housing the exhibition “City. History. Mobility” for the duration of the State Exhibition. The State Exhibition in Wiener Neustadt offers all sorts of attractions until November 2019.

School exchange at Peter-Ustinov-Gesamtschule

The school exchange between Monheim’s Peter-Ustinov-Gesamtschule and the Bundeshandelsakademie (HAK) in Wiener Neustadt has been a resounding success. For the second year in a row, two visits were planned for one school year in 2019. In March, students from HAK visited Monheim am Rhein. They took a tour of the city with the Mayor and went to the Chocolate Museum in Cologne. This was another opportunity for the participants to make new friends and left everyone looking forward to the next visit, which took place in fall in Wiener Neustadt.

Together they went on an educational trip to Brussels. The visit was such a success that the return visit to Wiener Neustadt was arranged without further ado for February 2018.
