Since November 1, 2025, Sonja Wienecke has headed the city administration as Mayor and simultaneously serves as Chair of the
City Council. As a nonpartisan mayor, she is not affiliated with any political group and sees herself as an impartial representative of the entire community.
The Mayor is elected directly by the citizens. In her dual role, she is both the head of the administration and the representative of the Council. She carries overall responsibility for administrative actions and stands at the top of the city’s political decision-making body. She represents the Council and the administration externally, chairs the meetings of the Council as well as the General and Financial Committee, and is responsible for setting the agendas.
At the inaugural meeting of the City Council on November 5, 2025, Sonja Wienecke was elected Chair of the Supervisory Board of Monheimer Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH, the city's energy supply and transport holding company, and the other municipal companies associated with it. In this role, she oversees the strategic orientation of the city’s holdings and ensures close coordination between administration, business, and municipal public services.
In her function as the head of the local authorities, the full-time mayor is assisted by the First Councillor, who acts as her general representative. She is elected to her office for a period of eight years and ensures continuity in administrative work. She is also responsible, among other duties, for supporting the Mayor in implementing political decisions.
To assist her in her wide range of representative duties, the Mayor is supported by two Deputy Mayors and one additional Deputy Mayor: Dr. Angela Linhart (CDU) as First Deputy Mayor, Anna Bergweiler (Peto) as Second Deputy Mayor, and Lorenz Dombrowski (SPD) as Third Deputy Mayor. They were also elected at the inaugural meeting of the Council on November 5, 2025. Their representative responsibilities include, among other things, visits to senior and wedding anniversaries, as well as attending numerous celebrations organized either by the city itself or by associations, organizations, and institutions.
