Children's capital

In 2010, the City Council of Monheim am Rhein set strategic goals, which were further developed in 2014. One of them is "The City of Monheim am Rhein – the Children's Capital – creates the best possible opportunities for the future of children and young people.”

Under this slogan, Monheim am Rhein has become one of the most child-friendly, adolescent-friendly and family-friendly towns in Germany. The concept of the "Children's Capital" refers to the goal of providing the best possible support for children growing up in a healthy environment. An infrastructure of support services that are closely interlinked is being developed for all children, enabling them to develop to their best potential – from birth to the start of their working life.

The City's overall strategy to ensure the best possible opportunities for children and young people is continuously being developed and builds on an exemplary child-friendly, adolescent-friendly and family-friendly infrastructure:

Infrastructure Children's Capital

Early support right from the start

In Monheim am Rhein, families are supported [intern]right from the very beginning. Every newborn child and its parents are welcomed personally. Young parents can meet up in the two Mo.Ki cafés and there are extensive courses and advice on pregnancy, birth and the early years of a child's life.

Childcare in kindergartens and private childcare facilities

Early educational support and ensuring that parents can balance family and working life are very important goals for the expansion of childcare services provided by [intern]kindergartens and private childcare facilities. The City of Monheim am Rhein voluntarily gives extra funding for staff training and extra personnel in all childcare centers and helps to maintain the excellent conditions of the buildings in which the children are looked after within the town.

Extensive support for schools

All of the schools in town will be renovated to become modern, all-day schools, oriented towards inclusion and, above all, the needs of children and teenagers. In addition, extra funding is voluntarily given to all-day care facilities, so that attractive offers complement the lessons. One special feature is the artistic support provided by the [extern]music school, the [extern]art school and the [intern]Ulla Hahn House. As a Smart City, the City of Monheim am Rhein attaches great importance to the modern digitalization of all schools.

Free childcare offers from 0-10 years

All childcare services offered by approved private childcare providers, kindergartens and primary schools are free of charge for children living in Monheim. The city subsidizes lunch in childcare centers and primary schools.

Attractive leisure activities

A wide range of [intern]leisure activities is available to children, young people and families. Interesting programs of events and activities are offered all year round in youth clubs and places where younger children can meet up as well as the art school, the music school, the Ulla Hahn House and at Haus Bürgel. Besides all that, there are a lot of different clubs as well as almost 70 attractive playgrounds for all age groups spread across the town.

Preventative Child Protection

In the Children's Capital, the protection of children and young people and the safeguarding of their rights play an important role. A specialist unit set up for this purpose helps leisure facilities, clubs, associations, schools and daycare centers to develop holistic protection concepts.

Mo.Ki – Monheim für Kinder

In Monheim am Rhein, equal development and educational opportunities, social involvement and a healthy upbringing for all children and young people are promoted through early, holistic and individual support. Since 2002, concepts as well as funding and advice programs have been systematically developed and the [intern]Mo.Ki (“Monheim for Children”) prevention chain from birth until the child enters work has been expanded.
