City Archive

The "memory of the city"

How the history of the city is documented and interpreted is not something that should be left to local authorities alone, but should be done together with the citizens of our town. Accordingly, suggestions on historical topics that deserve attention and how they could be handled are always welcome.

However, the "memory of the city" also preserves and makes accessible images, maps and plans, posters, the local press, and much more. The archive library houses around 500 volumes on the history of the city and the region.

One important source – especially for people researching their family history – are the civil registers stored in the City Archives. If you have ancestors from Monheim, Baumberg, Hitdorf or Rheindorf, you can be successful when researching the archives. The earliest registers of births, deaths and marriages date back to 1810.

However, the City Archive by no means only looks back into history. Its tasks also include documenting the current development of the city in as many ways as possible – because today is tomorrow’s yesterday. To this end, extensive collections of contemporary history have been created and are constantly being added to.

Moreover, the City Archive keeps a [intern]chronicle of current events, which is updated every month as well as the [intern]Monheim dictionary with entries from A to Z on the city's history (both in German).

The City Archive is located in the old building of the city hall, entrance Alte Schulstraße 32. Until further notice, visits are only possible by appointment.
