Monheim Cube

The cube and the three segments are currently being revised, since there have been problems with moisture penetration and the installed LEDs. The integrated sound system also needs to be optimized. The city expects the repair to take a few weeks. After that, the cube and the three segments will return to their respective locations.

Mischa Kuball: monheim_cube, 2022

The boulevard linking Monheim bus station with Eierplatz square is illuminated by a work of art by Mischa Kuball that is visible from afar.

“monheim_cube” consists of a large walk-in cube made of tubes of white light. In the form of a luminous square, its basic form is embedded in the ground just a few steps away. By working with a square, the artist has deliberately chosen a very simple form, thus making one thing clear: this work of art does not tell a story; rather, it wants to be experienced through our senses. When you approach it, it becomes apparent that it reacts interactively to our movement. The closer you get, the brighter it glows.

The highlight is the fact that the large cube contains a sound installation with various pieces of music and sound, the volume of which also adjusts to movement. The work of art combines light and sound and reacts to its environment, constantly changing its appearance. Depending on the time of the year or day, it creates an ever-changing mood and consequently also changes the space in which we move together.

Reflecting the central cube, three luminous fragments of the cube are located at various entrance and exit roads of the Monheim Mitte district, thus extending the artwork into the entire urban space.
